About John F. Long

John F. Long was an American politician and businessman who served as the 12th Governor of Arizona from 1959 to 1965. He was born in Oklahoma in 1905 and moved to Arizona in 1936. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from 1949 to 1952.
Long was elected Governor of Arizona in 1958 and served two terms. During his tenure, he oversaw Arizona’s transition from a largely rural state to an urbanized one. He was the first governor to create a Department of Economic Development and he established the Arizona Industrial Development Authority. He was also responsible for the establishment of the Arizona State University System.
Long was a strong advocate for education, economic development, and civil rights. He was a vocal supporter of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and he was the first governor of Arizona to appoint an African American to the Arizona Supreme Court. He also appointed the first woman to the Arizona Supreme Court.
Long was an important figure in Arizona’s history and his legacy continues to be felt today. He was a dedicated public servant and a leader who helped to shape the future of the state.
