About Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third President of the United States. He was a lawyer, planter, and politician who served as the second Vice President of the United States from 1797 to 1801.
Born in 1743, Jefferson was a gifted student who excelled in the classics. He studied law under the tutelage of George Wythe and graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1762. After a successful legal career, he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1769.
As a political leader, Jefferson was a strong advocate of the separation of church and state. He also championed the cause of states’ rights and was a vocal critic of the Federalist Party. He was a major proponent of the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States.
Jefferson was also a prolific writer. He wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which established the principle of separation of church and state in the United States. He is also credited with writing the Declaration of Independence, which declared America’s independence from Britain in 1776.
Jefferson was an influential figure in the early years of the United States. He left a lasting legacy that continues to shape the nation to this day.
